A Sleeping Generation

Main Text: Jonah 1:1-5

1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

How did Jonah arrive to this state of a deep sleep?

It began whit Jonah receiving a commandment from God

1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Jonah had three options in responding to God’s direct commandment.

Option One: Obey the Word of God and do as he was instructed.

Option Two: Disobey God’s commandment and remain stationary (do nothing, remain idle).

Option Three: Flee in disobedience in the opposite direction.

Jonah’s choice: He chose Option Three!

3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and  went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

What is interesting and fascinating about Jonah’s decision is the glimpse we are provided into what had taken root in his heart.  So strong was the grip of this root upon Jonah’s heart that either Jonah did not realize it, or did not care of the fact that the distance from his present location (Joppa) towards Nineveh was that of 550 miles versus that of 2,500 miles from Joppa to Tarshis (final destination due to his decision)!

Jonah fast asleep during a great storm.

4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.(this indicates a heavy deep sleep)

Before moving forward, please consider the following effects of Sleep.

"Sleep relaxes nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduces interactions with surroundings."

Today, God’s people are a Sleeping Generation! Deep asleep and oblivious to the surroundings!  Unwilling to take action for God!

How did God’s people arrive to this state of a deep sleep?

                           1)      Like Jonah, we received commandments from God!

Such as in Nineveh, the wickedness of this world has ascended unto God, and God has spoken…

Matthew 28:19 – Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 24:14 – And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Psalms 96:3 – Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.

                        2)        Like Jonah, we hardened our hearts and disobeyed

                        Hebrews 3:7-10

7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice

8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in   the wilderness:

9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

                        Zechariah 7:12

“Yea, they made their hearts as an adament stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.”

3)        Today’s Sleeping Generation (children of God) is willing to pay a higher price in order to keep away from doing God’s Will.

Jonah v3. “so he paid the fare thereof,”

It is mind blowing and alarming the extend we reach in keeping away from fulfilling our duties and the amount of money we are willing to spend on tangibles that keep us at a distance from God.

                        4)        God has sent the tempest

                                  2 Timothy 3:1 – 3:5

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Many like the men on the boat and the inhabitants of Nineveh are about to perish!

Will you wake up and correct your ways or remain asleep while the world around us continue to perish?
